Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 9, 2026
This policy explains what personal information the Future of Life Institute collects across this site, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.
1. Who We Are
The Future of Life Institute ("FLI," "we," "us") is the data controller responsible for the personal information collected through this site. Our registered address is:
Future of Life Institute
933 Montgomery Ave #1012
Narberth, PA 19072
United States
If you have questions about this policy or how we handle your information, contact us at websites@futureoflife.org.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information in the following ways:
- Information you provide. When you sign up for updates, we collect your name and email address, and — for some forms — your country and ZIP/postal code.
- Information collected automatically when you submit a form. We record the IP address and browser user agent associated with each submission, primarily to prevent abuse.
- Standard site analytics. We use Google Analytics/Google Tag Manager to understand aggregate traffic — pages viewed, device and browser type, approximate location, and referral source. See Cookies below.
We don't collect government ID numbers, financial account information, or other special categories of data through this site.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To send you newsletters, campaign updates, and — where applicable — action-alert emails you've opted into.
- For US contacts who provide a ZIP code, to route relevant advocacy and legislator-outreach opportunities through our organizing tools.
- To understand how visitors use the site, in aggregate, so we can improve it.
- To detect and prevent abuse of our forms, such as spam and rate-limit evasion.
4. The AI Doc Campaign and the Center for Humane Technology
The AI Doc campaign is a partnership between FLI and the Center for Humane Technology ("CHT"). If you sign up through that page, you're asked to confirm, before submitting, that the information you provide (your name and email) will be shared with CHT, and that you may receive emails administered by FLI, CHT, or both, about the film and related campaigns.
CHT is an independent organization and handles the communications it sends you under its own privacy practices. See CHT's own privacy policy at humanetech.com/privacy-policy, or contact CHT directly at hello@humanetech.com for questions about emails it sends you.
5. Legal Basis for Processing
If you're located in the EEA, UK, or another jurisdiction with similar requirements, we rely on:
- Consent — for sending marketing and newsletter emails, and for sharing your information with CHT through the AI Doc campaign. You can withdraw consent at any time (see Your Privacy Rights).
- Legitimate interests — for basic site analytics and for keeping our forms secure, balanced against your rights and interests.
6. Who We Share Your Information With
We share personal information only with the service providers that help us operate this site and run our campaigns, and — for signups on the AI Doc webpage — with CHT:
- Beehiiv — our email delivery platform, used to send newsletters and campaign emails.
- EveryAction — our advocacy CRM, used only for US-based signups that provide a ZIP code, to support legislator-outreach campaigns.
- Airtable — our internal record of form submissions.
- Center for Humane Technology — for signups on the AI Doc webpage, as described in Section 4.
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it with anyone else beyond what's described here, except where required by law.
7. International Data Transfers
FLI and our service providers operate in the United States. If you're located in the EEA, UK, or elsewhere outside the US, submitting information to us involves transferring it to the US. Where required, we rely on our service providers' standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards for these transfers.
8. Data Retention
We keep your information for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, or until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, whichever comes first. Copies may briefly persist in backups or in our service providers' systems for a short period after deletion, consistent with their standard retention practices.
9. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Delete your information.
- Restrict or object to our processing of your information.
- Receive a copy of your information in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time — every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, or you can contact us directly.
If you're in the EEA or UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.
We don't sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If you're a California resident or live in another US state with similar privacy rights, you can still contact us to exercise the rights that apply to you.
To exercise any of these rights, email websites@futureoflife.org.
10. Cookies and Other Tracking Technologies
We use Google Analytics/Google Tag Manager cookies to understand how visitors use this site. You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings; doing so may limit some site functionality but won't prevent you from browsing the site.
11. Children's Privacy
This site isn't directed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll reflect material changes by updating the effective date above. Your continued use of this site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
